Kelly J. Clifton is a a research faculty with the Center and is assistant professor in the Urban Studies and
Planning Program. She is also affiliated with the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and the Master
Program in Engineering and Public Policy. Her research and teaching activities focus on the influence of the built
environment on transportation choices.
Recently, Dr. Clifton is involved with a number of projects that focus on non-motorized transportation. She is currently
researching the connections between the built environment, walking and health as part of two multi-year studies funded
by the Active Living Research Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She is funded by the Maryland State Highway
Administration to develop and test a model of pedestrian demand. Dr. Clifton has also completed several studies of
pedestrian safety, which examines the physical environment at crash locations.
She holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from West Virginia University, a M.S. degree in planning from the
University of Arizona, and a Ph.D. in community and regional planning from the University of Texas at Austin.
